I Want.

I was very inspired by 2 guest speakers at the Asian Student Council meeting last night, especially one in particular. I figure he’s given his testimony about a gazillion times, but that doesn’t stop the message from being real and me from being in this feelgood high that I’m on. I had this most massive headache too, but I just couldn’t leave, especially being so entranced by the message that they were giving.

The focus was on activism and just seizing life. He told us about his life as a high school student - how he had joined the school’s Asian Appreciation club and saw that it was doing nothing. He had watched this movie trailer about Asian-Americans and gotten really inspired by it - and thus, he took on this project to invite all these people to watch it. With all the people he was getting to go, the theatre at Times Square welcomed him to do the movie screening at their theatre in their largest screening room, but ONLY if he was able to bring in 600 people. At 15 years old, he sent out e-mails to colleges, high schools, and got his friends to invite people. This was creating so much attention to the movie producers, that an agent had called him, informing him that they would send over some cast members and the director to the screening as well. He was hyped. On the day of, tickets were SOLD OUT.

When I die and face God, I want to be able to say that I used my talents. Sometimes people might look at this fire as “You’re being naive. It’s not possible.” But if you think about it - WE. ARE. CAPABLE. OF. SO. MUCH. When you read that statement. I want you to pause. and think. WE. ARE. CAPABLE. OF. SO. MUCH. We are. We are. We’re capable of doing so many things in the world that our heart may desire. And as corny as it sounds, all you really do have to do - is to believe. And that’s where it all begins. If you sincerely believe in something, you are capable.

Later on in life, he seized the opportunity to travel. In circumstances like this, we always end up “Yeah, but…” Why can’t we travel? Time. Money. Fear. How many times have we told ourselves, “Yeah, I want to go, but…” “Yeah, but…” Sometimes, you just DO IT. Of course there should be some sense of rationality. But sometimes, we allow our fears to create these excuses that rationalize and justify our desires that we might just be too scared to actually grab a hold of.

Sometimes, we just gotta drop things and just go. He was invited to this trip to Egypt for a few weeks. He didn’t have the money. He didn’t have the time. In the end, he just dropped everything and said “Let’s do it.” He took out loans and used whatever he had to go. He went, and it turned out that his friends had to leave early. Therefore, he was basically left alone. He was bugging out - he was in a country he had never been to before, never spoke the language, didn’t have anything but the messenger bag around his waist. He could’ve easily taken the next train to go back to the airport. But it was like “Fuck it.” And he just went out, backpacking, exploring the streets of Egypt. Sometimes, you just gotta dive in the deep end. Even though you don’t see the bottom of the pool, don’t know where you’re going, just do it. He met the locals, he stayed in the house of some, he traveled everywhere by himself and just explored. Since then, he’s traveled to about 25 countries - and that was all since LAST SUMMER (Summer 2010). He’s traveled to India, NORTH Korea, Belize, Egypt, Laos, and more.

I want to travel. I want to see God’s creation. I want to see the pyramids in Egypt, the Himalayas in India, the monuments in Italy, the Great Wall in China. I want to see the big, but I want to see the small too - I want to see the architecture, I want to meet the people, I want to try the foods, I want to experience life. Not that I’m experiencing it now, but I do want to be a witness to all of God’s beauty in this world. I do.

Let’s do this.
